What changes below the line

Under-$1,000 cities cluster in South/Southeast Asia plus select African and Latin markets — the same corridor as our cheapest-centres ranking, with a few pricier centres dropping in once cheap food and transport offset rent. Cooking local is the swing variable everywhere: $150 vs $400 monthly food decides borderline cities.

Above the line? Adjust, don't despair

Suburbs shave 20–35% off centre rents, which pulls a second tier of cities under the grand. Flatmates halve the rent line outright. And the salary-×3 rule still governs: a $3,000 remote income makes even mid-table cities comfortable.
