100 of our 106 tracked cities rent a centre 1-bed for $1,000 or less. Everywhere else, that budget means suburbs or flatmates.
A thousand dollars is the natural test budget: enough for a decent centre 1-bed across much of Asia, Africa and Latin America — and not close in Sydney, Vancouver or London-tier markets. 100 of the 106 cities we track clear it for a city-centre one-bedroom.
In the cheapest markets ($300–500 centres), $1,000 covers rent plus most living costs for one — the salary-×3 rule in reverse says a $3,000 remote income buys genuine comfort. Run any candidate through the rent-box calculator on its city page before romanticising it.
At the top end (centres above $3002), $1,000 gets a room in a shared flat or a long commute. The honest move there is co-living for month one while you learn the neighbourhoods — then sign local.
